James works with a small number of private clients each year to create original paintings — portraits, figures, places and abstracts — made with the same directness and material honesty as his studio practice.
How a commission works
Every commission begins with a conversation. James takes time to understand what you are drawn to — a subject, a feeling, a space — and from there the work develops in the studio. You are kept close to the process without it becoming prescriptive. The result is a painting that is genuinely yours.
Initial enquiry
Get in touch with a brief description of what you have in mind — a subject, a size, a room, or simply a feeling. James will respond personally and arrange a conversation.
Conversation and brief
A relaxed conversation — in the studio, by phone, or over email — to explore the brief, discuss reference material, and agree on scale, medium and approach.
Studio work
James works on the painting in his studio. For portrait commissions, a sitting may be arranged. Progress is shared at natural points, with space for your response.
Delivery
The finished work is delivered in person where possible, or carefully packaged and sent. Framing advice and installation guidance are available on request.

Portraits
Single or group portraits painted from life, from photography, or from a combination of both. James brings a loose, expressive approach — likenesses held within paint rather than defined by it.

Figurative works that move between the observed and the imagined. Suited to collectors who want something with presence and energy rather than strict representation.

Places and landscapes
Paintings of places that matter — a garden, a view, a stretch of coast. James works from visits, drawings and photography to build a painting that holds the feeling of a place.

Original abstract paintings developed in dialogue with the client — responding to colour, atmosphere, scale and the space the work will inhabit.

A note on process
James does not work to tight specifications or produce studies for approval before beginning. The paintings are made with freedom and commitment. Clients who commission him understand this and value the result for it. If you are looking for something more tightly controlled, he is happy to discuss whether a commission is the right fit.
